AI in the Classroom

UF faculty from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and the College of Education has been at the helm of designing the framework for the Florida public-schools’ AI coursework, modeling it after the National Science Foundation’s national guidelines for teaching AI in elementary and secondary schools. During this session, Dr. Ruzycki will discuss their innovative research and uncover how Artificial Intelligence can be used ethically within the classroom environment. Come ready for tons of free resources to use with your students.

Nancy Ruzycki Professor

Since 2018, she has received over 11 million dollars for her work upskilling teachers for artificial intelligence, data science, and professional development of teachers to use effective pedagogical practices in the classroom. At the student level EQuIPD creates summer camps and after-school programs for 6-12 students, and curriculum development projects for engineering design thinking, sustainability, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Ruzycki holds a PhD in physics, and is a National Board Certified teacher in addition to teaching at the university level within the department of Materials Science and Engineering in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering where she is a Full Instructional Professor.

Calvin McNeil Teacher

Calvin McNeil was born and raised in Orlando, Florida.  He attended William R., Boone High School, which is the region's original high school.  He also has this distinction for his middle school as well.  He is truly from the region in a classic sense.  He studied business while in college. The experience of entry level work gave Calvin a full understanding of how business works and what makes a company successful.  He also enjoyed almost 7 years working as program/curriculum creator for a test prep company.  His passion for business techniques, his experience with learning techniques and informing others led Calvin to the profession of teaching.  Using his combined experiences he now contributes to the State of Florida’s effort to promote Artificial Intelligence literacy.  He works with the University of Florida among other universities and will be teaching Sports Marketing at Osceola High School this fall.
